It takes creative mind, lots of courage to try-out new approaches and state-of-the art technology to develop the solutions of the 21st century. Nothing less applies to the latest endeavor at the University Medical Centre in Tuebingen, Germany.
Researchers and experts from the medical, engineering and usability field, have taken on the challenge to minimize sources for man-machine-errors in operating rooms. With support from industry and external services the University is currently setting up a lab that is in all actuality a 1:1 simulation of a real operating room.
By doing so experts from interdisciplinary backgrounds are analyzing and reshaping traditional operating rooms into the operating room of the 21st century. Von der Mosel (1971) and Bleyer (1992) reported that two thirds of technical errors are caused by problems in the interaction between machine and user and not by technical defects. It is estimated that in Germany alone additional annual costs of 396 million Euros are required for treatment of complications arising from intensive care unit equipment of questionable usability.
The problem is an international phenomenon: ergonomic aspects in the OR did not receive adequate consideration. One reason may be that until recently it was not necessary to optimize the “business”. Medical progress during the last 100 years has been without equal. Up until a few years ago, healthcare systems were adequately financed and there was enough medical and nursing staff to compensate for shortages and deficiencies in the workplace. Increasing complexity of the workplace, however, makes it impossible to continue to do so.
Mangold technology amongst solutions from other technology partners will support the architects, domestic appliance and medical technicians at the Medical University Centre in Tuebingen, that have met with top-ranking producers of medical equipment, along with university physicians, to design the integrated OR of the future – that guarantess greatly improved conditions for surgeons and bottom line: Save lives.
