Example: Web usability study
Aim:
A company wants to test their newly designed web pages. They authorize a usability lab to examine if visitors of the webpage are logically and easily guided through the web offer. The main focus is on a digital questionnaire. It is important to find out how the test persons behave while filling out this form because this is the main part of the companies new web presence.
Test phase in the lab:
One digital camera is videotaping the test person's face and recording his audio comments. Another camera records the users environment because he has to do some manual work while filling out the online questionnaire. Every action on screen and every user activity like mouse clicks, text strings, information about active program windows etc. will be recorded automatically by our user data logging software LogSquare. An eye tracking system additionally analyzes the movement of the test persons eyes.
During the live session the observer (a psychologist or usability specialist) logs his first impressions about the test persons behavior using the event logging and analysis system INTERACT with an individual and predefined catalog of criteria (e.g. "user frustrated", "usability issue", "unexpected system behavior" etc.).
Interpretation process:
After the test all three videos (test person's face, full view and screen movie) can be shown and controlled synchronously from within INTERACT. The data collected through LogSquare and from the eye tracker are both imported into INTERACT.
The observer(s) now are able to refine their initial coding, wathcing the collected data (videos and log information) in sync and at an arbitrary level of time granularity and speed. INTERACT and its add-on moduls take care that all data will be in sync at any time, even if they have been collected through different systems and on different time scales!
Creating results:
INTERACT offers a vast amount of qualitative and quantitative analysis possilibities. All results, wheter the behavior of the testperson, the screen activities or, if needed, the physiological data of the tested person, can be presented in form of graphs or statistics.
INTERACT and its add on modules
- unrestricted and flexible event-logging
- synchronization of event information, video and 3rd party log file data
- integration of numerical data such as physiological data or eye tracking data
- creating highlight videos for documentation and presentation
- screen recording and user data logging
- calculation of inter-rater-reliability
- statistical data analysis and data visualization
- data export in a variety of ways
