The observation laboratory at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin is researching the influence of group concepts on the behavior and well-being of young children. A Mangold observation laboratory including VideoSyncPro Studio and several INTERACT licenses are used for this purpose. The laboratory offers numerous possibilities for use both for research purposes and for teaching in the ASH Berlin degree programs (e.g. EBK, ET/PT, social work):

 

  • observation and documentation exercises in early childhood education as well as developmental diagnostics in developmental psychology
  • analysis of children's attachment and play behavior as well as the quality of interaction between children, students, mothers/fathers and educational professionals

Social relationships are critical for human health and happiness. These relationships are so important that we enter the world seemingly primed to take in social information; within the first few hours of life, newborns already show a perceptual bias to social stimuli like faces and voices. 

These early perceptual biases are thought to set the stage for subsequent social-cognitive abilities – such as the ability to understand the thoughts and emotions of others – that ultimately facilitate the formation of critical social relationships. 

However, the degree to which different individuals show these perceptual biases and are ultimately successful at advanced social-cognitive processes varies, and some cases may be indicative of disorders like autism.

The research aims to identify and characterize the neurobiological and neurodevelopmental factors that contribute to individual differences in social abilities. 

Taking an environment-gene-brain-behavior, lifespan development, individual differences approach, we employ techniques including genetic, epigenetic and hormonal assays; EEG, fMRI, and fNIRS; eye-tracking, self-report questionnaires, videotaped real-world social interactions, and performance on social-cognitive tasks; and computational modeling to understand, predict, and improve social outcomes for all individuals.

The lab is equipped with a Mangold audio-/video-setup including cameras, microphones, the VideoSyncPro Studio software for synchronized recording, and several INTERACT licenses for coding and analyzing.

The Institute of Transport Economics in Oslo is using INTERACT when analyzing long-term video recordings of interactions and behaviour in road traffic.  

INTERACT is applied to extract the video clips of identified events/situations from video recordings (for example interactions between cyclists and automated shuttles on a signalized intersection). 

Those clips are then watched in INTERACT in order to categorize the interactions by using several variables, such as “type of road user” (cyclist, pedestrian, car); “type of maneuver” (yielding, not yielding); “safety” (safe, less risky, very risky); “type of evasive maneuver” (braking, swerving, stopping); etc.. 

In the next step, INTERACT is used to provide statistical analyses of these variables.  

 

Two examples of projects where the research have used INTERACT are 

 

  • ReCyCLIST, where they observe behaviour of cyclists on locations identified as risky, before and after a safety measure has been implemented there; and
  • Groruddalen ENOVA, where they observe interactions between automated taxis and other road users on various intersections and other challenging locations in Oslo.

  • Coding and analyzing videos of infants from a clinic setting to study spontaneous movements.
  • Coding and analyzing videos of parent-child interactions recorded by parents at home on their smartphones.
  • Encode and analyze videos of neuroscientific examinations with parallel recording of brain activity (via fNIRS) and physiological parameters (heart rate).

Teamwork is becoming increasingly important for organizations. In teams, resources can be better bundled and combined in order to master complex tasks and react quickly to changing external requirements. 

Teams are the engine for innovation. How well the team members work together is crucial to their success. 

Team interaction behavior forms the basis for decision-making and creativity processes in teams, controls team performance and influences the individual well-being and work attitudes of team members.

In the TeamLab at the University of Hamburg, these team interactions and the resulting dynamics can be made tangible with the help of professional behavioral observation. 

Together with a network of interdisciplinary cooperation partners, various studies are carried out there. Particular attention is paid to the development of automated observation methods in order to reduce the amount of human coding required for evaluation in the long term and to develop real-time feedback on team interactions.

The Observation Laboratory for Child Development and Education (BKEB) at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences serves as a facility for research and teaching aimed at exploring and understanding children's behavior, development and educational practices

It acts as a resource for research activities as well as for the training of students in the field of childhood education and also offers further education and counseling opportunities for parents, educational professionals, students and researchers. 

Within the laboratory, observations and video recordings of children's behavior and the parenting behavior of parents and professionals are carried out, which are then analyzed and interpreted using software.

The focus is on

  • Assessment of attachment quality in children up to the age of 12 (stranger situation test, story completion procedure, Attachment Q-Sort).
  • Determination of attachment-based parenting behavior and the attachment representation of parents and professionals (e.g. Adult Attachment Interview).
  • Parent training in attachment-oriented parenting behavior.
  • Exploration diagnostics and exploration support.
  • Developmental diagnostics and developmental support.

Over the past few decades, the role of teachers has gradually evolved from a knowledge mediator to a guide for self-organized, learning students

Various studies show that the share of student-centered learning phases, during which the teacher supports the students in individual or group conversations, is between 40% and 80%, depending on the school type. 

While the teacher-centered phases have been thoroughly researched, the open learning phases have hardly been studied in a real school environment yet.

The main reason for that is that direct observations are affected by the presence of persons and cameras to an extent which makes it impossible to draw meaningful conclusions from them.

The department of psychology at the University of Heidelberg is interested in the development of self-regulation in early childhood

It is well known that parental co-regulation plays a central role in this. 

So far, however, there is a lack of instruments that allow a non-judgmental, neutral description of the self- and co-regulative behavior of children and their parents on the basis of observations in natural interactions.

The video-microanalytical coding scheme SECORE (SElf- and CO-REgulation in caregiver-child dyads) was developed for this purpose. 

This instrument is currently used in different task settings with children of different ages in families of different European, American and Asian cultures.
