Even if the advertisement says one thing we often like to suggest otherwise: the schnitzel on our plate does not usually come from a pig that digs in the dirt and then lies in the comfortable straw. Our eating habits require other forms of productions on behave of the agriculture. Animal protection plays an important role, for it is among a research group at the University of Hohenheim, which is supported by Mangold International.
Behavioral Physiology of Farm Animals
The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Animal Breeding at the University of Hohenheim is concerned in different departments with methods of behavior recording, behavior physiology and genetics of farm animals. The department for behavior physiology of farm animals is concerned mainly with the effects of endogenous and exogenous factors on the neuro-endocrine-immune system and the behavior of farm animals. The department for farm animal ethology and small animal breeding works on genetic and environmental disruptions of poultry.
The research activities serve to understand the interactions of animals within their environment and the consequences for health, well-being and performance of animals as well as for food quality.
Support Mangold International
The department for behavior physiology of farm animals will offer in the fall of 2013 a graduate course on Methods of Farm Animal Ethology in cooperation with ethologists of other research institutions (Bavarian State Research Institute for Agriculture and Martin Luther University Halle). The goal is to deepen the knowledge of planning, execution and analysis of ethological issues in farm animals.
In addition, the course will perform live-observations of various farm animals and video-based analyzes on the program. The evaluation of the generated video and audio materials is carried out with the software INTERACT. Mangold International supports the course by providing free INTERACT licenses to all participants. The great advantage of INTERACT is that it’s easy-to-use and has a user friendly interface. This way the participants do not need extensive software training. They can simply begin their analysis. INTERACT provides professional results quickly and numerous statistical reports (e.g. sequence analysis, kappa analysis) and export functions are already integrated.
