Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare are no contradiction
With support. software and lab equipement from Mangold an institution-wide project could be realized.
Our eating habits, particularly the worldwide increasing consumption of animal products, require intensive forms of productions on the behavior of agriculture. Animal protection plays an important role at the Institute for Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare at the University of Vienna, Austria.
The Institute is involved with several projects in farm animal behavior, the relation between animal and human and the methods for animal welfare evaluation. The goal is to develop and implement the husbandry systems according to the needs of animals.
Some projects conduct live-observations on various farm animals and video-based analysis. The observation of animals in their natural environment, such as stalls or out in the field, is a real challenge when monitoring livestock. The video recordings should sometimes be recorded in real time (e.g. during feeding) and also recorded in a time-lapse (e.g. during sleeping). This recording technique requires the installation of very robust and weatherproof equipment. Mangold International has developed particular solutions for those specific requirements.
The evaluation of the generated video and audio materials is carried out with the software INTERACT. The great advantage of INTERACT is that it is easy-to-use with a user friendly interface. This way the participants do not need extensive software training and can immediately begin their analysis. INTERACT provides fast professional results and numerous statistical reports (e.g. sequence analysis, kappa analysis) and last but not least, the export feature of data is already integrated.
The following testimonial shows the satisfaction of the researchers at the University of Vienna: “Once again I am amazed about your rapid and professional help! While I was having similar problems (note: codec problems with video files) from other companies, I had to wait weeks for a response and then usually the response is not satisfying. With you I have the impression that you are sitting in front of your computer all day long, just waiting for my request. With your support, an institution-wide project can now be realized.” Engineer Christian Haberl, Institute for Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare, University of Vienna, Austria.
